A powerful tale of love, gratuitous violence and incredible bravery set in the wild jungles of Borneo. The story also gives a rare and fascinating insight into the disparate cultures found in a small British colony before and during World War Two. It is 1938 and newly married Australian Tom Field takes his young bride Mary to live on the copra plantation he manages in British North Borneo. Here she meets the stuffy colonial British, the friendly Chinese shopkeepers and the proud and colourful indigenous people who live in traditional longhouses. Soon after the outbreak of war in Europe they return to Sydney for the birth of their second child. While they are away Japan invades Singapore and then overruns Borneo virtually unopposed. The Europeans are herded into internment camps and the Australian and British forces captured in Singapore are taken to Borneo and subjected to inhumane treatment in the POW camps in Kuching and Sandakan. Tom is recruited to help the newly formed SRD (based on the British Special Overseas Executive) and returns to Borneo to work covertly behind the lines. He contacts his head-hunter friends and they embark on a series of audacious missions against the hated invaders. After a close personal encounter with the enemy he eventually leads his fierce band of warriors to assist the Australian 9th Division in the liberation of his beloved adopted country.

This is really a 3.5 star book for me. It's a gripping story with loads of historical detail. The pacing is great, the actions scenes riveting, and the setting really well-drawn.The bummer is the writing, which is all over the place. There's no firm POV, even within a given scene, and it's oft-times quite rambly. The prose consistently lets down the otherwise engaging story.
Still, this is a very entertaining book. I quite enjoyed it.

In Kinabalu Shadow Steve Morris Keith McAllister 9780755211982 Books Reviews
I loved the way the writer intertwined the factual information of the era with the storyline that I imagine was fiction. As I have travelled around most of the areas referred to during the story I could relate to the places and events mentioned throughout the book. Even without this knowledge I believe this book provides an excellent read and is worth adding to any booklist for general use or as a story for young people with a thirst to learn something of our history.
I stumbled across this book by searching for Australian Authors.
Its a great story, definatley worth the purchase price its a great read.
I am lucky enough to have traveled to Borneo and climbed Mt. Kinabalu.
Beautiful place wonderful people with a sad history of Japanese war time brutality.
After reading this book it made me appreciate my time there even more.
Excellent WW2 adventure, from the viewpoint of British/Australian colonials in pre-WW2 to WW2 in SE Asia/Pacific.
Graphic, painful, heartwarming, and "based on true stories."
Buy it; you won't regret it.
A wonderful read. Fictional characters in a real world setting. The characters are well developed and the historic events are riveting. May not be the best written book I have read, but the content and the characters carry it well.
In less than a week I finished reading this book because I just kept wondering what will happen next. The author gives the right amount of description yet not over descriptive. He tells it like it was and yet does not go too far in to the details. Once the war starts things change fast. I recommend this highly to anyone who likes a little romance and some adventure.
Interesting read in regards to the second world war in the Pacific and the eventual defeat of the Japanese in the area. It was also an insight into the brutality that occurred during the Japanese occupation. While the book started well, it somehow failed to keep up the momentum towards the end (was the author in too much of a hurry and wanted to finish quickly?) and somehow not enough depth in the writing.
Oh boy!! What a great story. If you like war stories then this book is going to be a keeper. I like stories about WWII, and about Australia so this satisfied me on two fronts. Very grafic but probably real as to what happens in war. Good read and keeps you interested. Men, women should read. I will look for more by this author.
